All About Fasteners, Episode 3: The Strength of Screws
If a screw fails to hold two pieces of material together on your job site, it has failed in one of five principle ways. Learn those ways in this video.
Do you know the three factors that determine the quality of a wood screw?
How about the five different ways that a screw can fail to hold?
If you don’t know the answers to these questions, take a few minutes to watch this video. You’ll never look at a simple wood screw the same way again.
Gustavo Angola, Technical Specialist at ITW Construction Products Canada, gives Rob a “white board” lesson on wood screw physics. At issue are the ways in which a screw interacts with the material it is embedded in (i.e., the “substrate), the tensile (pulling) and shear (crosswise) strength of the steel, and the corrosion resistance of the coating.
But there’s a lot more to it than that. Watch the video to find out.
